Imagine a fitness center where personal trainers, registered dietitians, physical therapists, Pilates instructors and massage therapists all work together seamlessly for the betterment of their clients. This is exactly what NutriFormance- Fitness, Therapy and Performance strives to offer our clients.
Here are a few pairings from recent memory where we were able to help a client feel better and improve their performance by working as a team.
Forearm Fred– Fred has been training consistently for a few months and is also an avid pickle ball player and golfer. During the golf season he began to feel discomfort in his forearm, what has become known as “Golfer’s Elbow”. His trainer met with one of the physical therapists and together they tweaked the exercises that Joe was doing in his sessions and added a few more therapeutic exercises. In addition, they scheduled two dry needling sessions with the physical therapist. They developed a home therapy program that Joe could do each morning. This intervention prevented Joe from having to discontinue his golf game and allowed him to finish the season pain free while keeping his workout schedule.
IT Band Bettie– Bettie was working with her Pilates instructor and mentioned that she has had a reoccurring discomfort in her knee. Her Pilates instructor suspected maybe this knee issue originated from her hips- specifically her TFL- a muscle that attaches to the IT Band. She suggested that Bettie get a massage to see if a therapist can bring her some relief. She scheduled a massage with one of our therapists and the LMT almost immediately found a trigger point in her TFL muscle and got it to release which lessened her knee discomfort when she got off the table. Bettie was able to continue working with her Pilates instructor and didn’t miss out on any of her fitness goals. Sometimes the source of discomfort is driven by muscle adhesion or a restriction in fascia.
Boy Scout Bill– Bill’s son was a boy scout and had an aggressive hike planned with this troop. The specifics of the hike required the parents to reach a certain BMI if they wanted to participate. Bill met with us and we laid out a plan to meet with a trainer and registered dietitian. We had Bill step on the InBody machine and determined his lean body mass, percent body fat and resting metabolic rate. Based on these numbers the registered dietitian set up a nutrition plan that would help him reach his goal and go on the hike with his son. Because the hike was somewhat rigorous, we also had to make sure Bill was fit enough to complete the entire hike, so we set up an incline walking program to complete 3-4x week and a strength training program 2x week. After 10 weeks Bill met the requirements to participate in the hike and had a wonderful experience with his son that he will cherish always.
ACL Annie– Annie is a high-level soccer player who unfortunately tore her ACL. Many times when this happens an athlete’s fitness level declines and the road to top form is hindered by not only the injury, but also being deconditioned. Annie completed most of her physical therapy at a different clinic, but was also seeing a personal trainer at NutriFormance to maintain as much of her conditioning as possible. We trained the other 75% of her body. We also had her meet with a registered dietitian to make sure her nutrition was on point to support her recovery. At week 16, it was time for us to implement our ACL Bridge protocol which included back pedal running on steep inclines, agility work and specific strength training. Our patented incline treadmill work forced the quadricep and surrounding musculature to fire more rapidly.
Trophy Winner Ted– Ted is an avid golfer with dreams of winning his club’s member guest golf tournament. However, he knew that his power and endurance would need to improve if he was to beat the club champion. Ted signed up for personal training and began a customized training program including medicine ball throws, multi-joint movements including trap bar deadlifts, cable rotations, etc. In as little as 2-3 months he noticed he was outdriving some of his friends. By the time the tournament rolled around he was full of confidence and knew that his long-game could carry him through the tournament. Much to his satisfaction, he and his guests won the tournament in front of his family and friends. To this day, he still credits his strength and conditioning program with much of his success.
